What is a Graphic Tablet and how it works

A graphic tablet or a drawing tablet is a device that allows you to draw on the computer by drawing with a digital pen over the surface of the tablet, so the lines are digitized and they appear directly on the computer screen as if you were drawing with pen and paper.

If you want to draw on the computer, you need a drawing tablet.

This is because a drawing tablet lets you draw on the computer comfortably and naturally, using the digital stylus of the tablet rather than a clumsy mouse.

Drawing on the computer with a mouse is much more uncomfortable and just doesn't yield the same results as drawing naturally with a digital stylus. The way you hold a mouse simply is not optimized for drawing, whereas a digital stylus of a drawing tablet replicate the wrist movements that you do when drawing with real pen and paper.

Additionally, the drawing tablet has something that the mouse doesn't have. A drawing tablet has pressure sensitivity, which means the drawing tablet detects how hard or soft you are pressing down with the digital stylus over the surface of the tablet, and it translates that into thicker or thinner lines on the computer. You just can't do this with a mouse, because a mouse doesn't have pressure sensitivity.

Pressure sensitivity allows you to control things like the line weight, line opacity, texture or even colour of the lines as you draw them, by simply pressing down more or less with the digital pen over the tablet surface.

What Are the Advantages of Using a Drawing Tablet?

Drawing with a graphic tablet has various advantages over using a mouse:

A drawing tablet has pressure sensitivity, which a mouse does not have. Hence, you can vary line weight, opacity or colour with the digital pen pressure.

Types of Drawing Tablets

The main 3 types of drawing or graphic tablets are:

Drawing Tablets Without Screen

These are the most basic drawing tablets. They get connected to a computer through an USB cable or through wireless (bluetooth) connection.

These drawing tablets "map" the computer screen onto the drawing tablet surface, which means that the corners of the monitor correspond to the corners of the tablet surface or active area.

When you place the digital stylus on the top left corner of the drawing tablet, this places the cursor on the top left corner of the screen, and the same goes for every other corner. Every other point on the tablet surface is equally mapped to the corresponding point on the computer monitor.

This type of graphics tablets usually gets connected to the computer through a USB cable, although there are also models with wireless functionality that don't need any cable.

The drawback of this type of drawing tablet is that you draw with your hand over the drawing tablet, but your eyes are looking at the computer monitor. This is something you have to get used to, but once you get used to it, it feels like second nature.

Drawing Tablets with Screen (Pen Display Drawing tablets, Drawing monitors, etc)

These are drawing tablets that have their own built-in screen, which is a digitizer screen. They get connected to a computer through USB and HDMI, and they serve as a kind of second monitor, over which you can draw directly.

This type of graphic tablets can duplicate the content of the computer monitor onto their built-in screen, so you draw directly on the screen of the drawing tablet.

This is a great improvement from the previous type, because now you can see your drawing under your hand, just like when you draw with a pencil on an actual paper.

Note that this type of drawing tablets, even though they have their own screen, they still need to be connected to a computer in order to function.

As you can see on the image above, when you connect a drawing tablet with screen to a computer, the image on the computer monitor can be duplicated onto the drawing tablet screen, so that you can draw directly over the image on the drawing screen.

These drawing tablets are more expensive that the previous, more basic ones, however they are well worth the investment as they make a huge difference in terms of comfort and results when drawing on screen.

Tablet Computers (with their own Operating System)

Here we get to actual tablet computers, with their own operating system (whether it's Windows, iOS or Android) and of course their own built-in touch screen.

This type of tablets have their own integrated processor and operating system, which means that they can run by themselves any kind of design software (Photoshop, etc.) without having to be connected to another computer at all.

In this case, the tablet itself is the computer, and again you draw directly on the tablet screen.

As you can see, there are no cables required anywhere, as the tablet computer works independently and does not need to be connected to another computer.

The huge advantage of this type of tablets is the possibility of carrying them anywhere, and they have their own storage memory, WiFi, and everything else that a full computer has.

How to Choose a Graphic Tablet

These are the most important points that you need to take into account when choosing a graphic tablet:

1) Choose the type of graphic tablet you want:

If you want a cheap graphics tablet to get started, you can get a basic model, without screen. They are quite cheap and you can start to do your first drawings with them.
If you want a good drawing tablet that will enjoy using for a long time, buy a graphic tablet with screen (pen display). The improvement in comfort, usability and results is well worth the price difference.
If you want something portable, to be able to draw anywhere, then get a tablet computer which you will use not only for creative work but also any kind of general use, since it's a full computer.

2) What size to get:

For graphic tablets without screen, a Medium size (similar to an A4 paper) is a good size in most occasions. A Medium size for a graphic tablet without screen is around 8.3'' x 6''. A bigger tablet will have a bigger drawing surface which is good, but also make sure you have enough desk space. Smaller tablets may be cheaper, but they can get too small for most monitors nowadays.
For graphic tablets with screen, size depends heavily on your preferences. A 13'' to 15.6'' drawing screen is compact and portable. A 19'' inch screen is a pretty good size for many people. 21'' and above is a superb drawing experience, just make sure you have enough desk space.
If you are getting a tablet computer, you will be looking at a combination of performance and size. Pick the operating system that you want (Windows, iOS or Android), then narrow down to a few models, then within that choose the size you want.

3) Wireless or not wireless?

This depends on your preferences. Generally speaking, Wireless is a good thing to have in a graphic tablet, as less cables means a less cluttered desk and therefore tidier and more comfortable. In most situations, it is worth paying a bit more for a wireless drawing tablet.

4) Pressure sensitivity levels:

Here, more is generally better, to a certain extent. This means that pressure sensitivity levels matter, but it's not all that matters. A digital stylus performance is determined by other factors such as report rate, delay, parallax effect, etc. When buying a graphic tablet, try to shoot for more pressure levels, but if you see a tablet that you like and it has 2048 pressure levels, it doesn't mean that it's a bad choice, simply make sure all other specs are solid.

This point is important. Pressure sensitivity levels are not everything that matters. They give an indication of how sensitive the digital stylus is to pressure. With more pressure levels, you have more sensitivity, or speaking more accurately, more "granularity" of pressure detection. The digital pen can detect smaller variations in pressure. This means that the digital stylus should be able to give you more realism when reproducing the lines and brush strokes you create when drawing on the tablet.

For digital drawing and illustration, it's a good idea to have a good amount of pressure sensitivity. However if you are only going to do graphic design, it may not be the most important spec for you.

Overall, just remember that pressure sensitivity levels is not all that matters, and that a tablet with 2048 (or even 1024) levels can still beat a tablet with more pressure levels, if you look at all the specs as a whole.

5) Tilt sensitivity:

Some drawing tablets and tablet computers have tilt sensitivity, which means that they can detect the inclination of the digital stylus with respect to the tablet surface or screen. With this feature, by varying the inclination of the pen you can create thinner or thicker brush strokes, or change the texture, getting realistic effects such as shading with the side of a pencil or simulating a real brush. This is a pretty good feature to have that can help you create more realistic and spectacular digital images.

6) Price:

The price range on drawing tablets varies depending on whether it has a screen or not, wireless or not, and the overall specifications. The cheapest graphic tablets for beginners or intermediate users have very affordable prices with good performance. Prices are dropping due to the vast amount of manufacturers and models, so you can get a pretty good drawing tablet without screen from 70 to 300£. You can also find cheaper tablets but these will be smaller sizes and lower specs.
For graphic tablets with screen, prices are dropping greatly due to competition, so they are incredibly affordable nowadays. A decent pen display tablet can cost anything from 350£ to 1500£, depending on the size and specs (larger screens are more expensive).
Prices of tablet computers also vary greatly so it's difficult to set a narrow price range. Small Android tablets are cheaper but potentially less powerful, whereas a good Windows tablet computer or iPad Pro can be more expensive but at the same time worth the investment, since they are amazing computers.

There are certainly other factors to consider when buying a drawing tablet. Things like whether it has programmable shortcut keys, whether the digital pen is battery-free or rechargeable, and even the feeling of the surface when drawing. Depending on the tablet surface rugosity, the feeling will be more like drawing on paper, or on something that feels more like glass. Different users have different preferences when it comes to the tablet surface feeling.

Drawing Tablet Brands and Manufacturers

These are the main drawing tablet brands and manufacturers.

Wacom

The most widely known brand for drawing tablets is clearly Wacom . This graphic tablet manufacturer is the most reknowned one, they make high quality drawing tablets and it is the brand of choice for many professionals. Wacom has a wide range of drawing tablets, from beginner to intermediate to professional level.

Wacom offers drawing tablets without screen (the most famous is their Intuos range of drawing tablets), as well as pen display drawing tablets with screen (the renowned Cintiq drawing tablets). Additionally, Wacom also has a range of full tablet computers optimized for digital artists, called MobileStudio Pro.

Huion

Another very strong drawing tablet brand is Huion. This is another high quality manufacturer offering drawing tablets for all levels, including pen tablets without screen and pen display tablets with screen. Huion drawing tablets are getting more and more market share because of their high quality-price ratio, as they are pretty good products for a fraction of the cost of a Wacom.

Ugee

UGee is another well known brand of graphic tablets and pen display drawing monitors. UGee tablets are again another viable alternative to Wacom, at a fraction of the cost. UGee can be in some cases even more affordable than Huion, but you may find some specs are slightly lower on the UGee than on the closest Huion equivalent. This is a bit of a generalization and it depends on which models you are comparing, but you get a rough idea.

Again, UGee may be a brand worth considering especially if you are thinking of buying a drawing tablet with screen. Since Wacom Cintiq pen display tablets are usually on the expensive side, it's worth looking at Wacom alternatives, and UGee can be a good option.

If you are on a budget, UGee drawing tablets with screen are pretty good value, perhaps with some small compromises such as not having programmable buttons on the sides or having a more reduced number of models to choose from. Even with these considerations, you may find one of the UGee tablets fits perfectly within your budget and your requirements, so they are definitely worth checking out. XP-Pen

XP-Pen is a high-tech japanese manufacturer of graphic tablets. They make high quality models that are used both at professional level and by art enthusiasts around the world.

XP-Pen is notorious for having a wide portfolio of graphic tablets of all sizes and specifications. They probably have one of the largest range of pen tablets and pen display tablets, so whether you are looking for a cheap tablet for beginners or a more advanced pen display, XP-Pen has one that matches your requirements.

Parblo

Another chinese manufacturer of drawing tablets, both with and without screen, Parblo makes affordable tablets and they have some very interesting models.

Yiynova

Yet another chinese graphic tablets manufacturer. They target low cost graphic tablets and many users love them because you can get pretty good results at a very low price.

Yiynova has a decent range of products in their portfolio. Generally speaking their tablets are on the low cost side, so they may be a good option for beginners. Monoprice

You may be wondering why Microsoft, Apple and Samsung are on this list, however the truth is that, although they don't build drawing tablets as such, they do build tablet computers that are pretty awesome for drawing. Indeed many people use devices such as the Microsoft Surface Pro, iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tablets for drawing.

If you want a tablet that you can use not only for drawing but also for everything else including browsing the internet, using generic office programs and playing games, you may want to look at a tablet computer for drawing.

What computer is required for drawing, 3D and graphic design?

What kind of computer do you need for digital drawing, 3D modeling/sculpting and graphic design?

You basically need a computer powerful enough to run smoothly image editing programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, ProCreate, Corel Painter or 3D software such as 3D Studio Max, ZBrush or Maya. These are very powerful (and power-hungry) programs that require quite a lot of processing power and computer memory.

Since you will be working with often high resolution images and complex 3D models, you need a computer with a decent processor and enough RAM memory. Photoshop files can become quite large as you use many layers, embedded objects, high resolution images, etc. 3D model files can become complex and large as you increase the amount of details, texture, polygons and objects in your project.

If your computer is short of processing power these programs won't work smoothly, and ifyou don't have enough RAM they will probably run slowly and with lag as the computer tries to compensate by using the hard disk memory as if it was RAM, which is not good for speed.

As a rule of thumb, a computer for drawing, 3D modeling or graphic design should meet at least the following requirements:

- Intel® Core 2 or AMD Athlon® 64 at 2 GHz or more
- Microsoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10
- 2 GB or more RAM (8 GB recommended)
- 2.6 GB or more free storage space for the installation in 32 bits operating systems, or 3.1 GB for 64 bit systems.

- Graphics card/monitor: 1024 x 768 display (1280x800 recommended) 16-bit color, and 512 MB or more VRAM (Video RAM), 2 GB recommended.

This is valid for Windows PCs and Mac computers.

It is also worth noting that there are tablet computers out there with a multi-touch screen and digital stylus, such as the Microsoft Surface Pro range. These can be a pretty compelling option as they not only function as creative workstations but also for general type of work. With this kind of tablet computers you can draw directly on the screen without the need of a separate graphic tablet, plus they are extremely lightweight and portable.

Accessories for Digital Illustrators, 3D modelers and graphic designers

There are certain accessories that can be useful when it comes to drawing on the computer, doing 3D modeling or doing graphic design. These are optional accessories, but they are useful expecially for those long sessions in front of the computer, as they will increase comfort and will avoid injuries due to bad postures and repetitive stress.

As soon as you have your drawing tablet and Photoshop (or other drawing software) installed on your computer, first of all make sure to spend some time doodling and experimenting to get used to the feeling of drawing with your graphic tablet.
